Best Free Content Writing Tools for Freelance Writers in 2021
Over the last few years, I have experimented with many content writing tools — Some ended up helping me immensely, others were just a waste of my time.
As a freelance writer, you should look for two important points when picking a content writing tool:
- The tool should help save your time
- It should help you write better
In this article, I have put together some of my favourite free writing tools, that I use almost daily

One of my personal favourite content writing tools, the CoSchedule Headline Analyzer helps you create more engaging headlines that can perform better on search engine results and social media.
After all, the headlines you create should be interesting and compelling enough for people to read the entire post. The tool analyses the complete headline according to character length, word balance, and powerful words that are known to do well.
#2 – 750 words
The 750 words web app does exactly as its name states — It motivates you to write 750 words every day. It is your own personal space, so you can write anything and everything that you want. It’s all about writing every day, and developing a habit.
It also saves your progress so that you can easily analyse how much you wrote every day.
#3- Cliche Finder
You know how sometimes you end up using the most cliched words and phrases in your articles over and over again? And you don’t even notice them until you are editing your article for the last time?
The Cliche Finder is a content writing tool that helps find repetitive and overused words or phrases in your content that don’t add any value to the article.
FocusWriter is a desktop application that offers distraction free writing. You can choose a background of your own or one of the preset backgrounds available in the app. You can also set a time limit or word counter.
One of the main reasons why I like this content writing tool is that — It’s a software app and doesn’t need internet to work. That means you can truly disconnect and focus on your writing.

#6 – Grammarly
Grammarly claims to check complete grammar of your content. But the reason this tool isn’t at the top of my list is because of two reasons:
- It isn’t as effective as it claims to be
- To get access to all of its features, you need to buy a premium subscription
Even with the premium version, the tool would only be able to find at most 20-25% issues in the content. I would suggest using Grammarly just to quickly see any commas you might have missed, wrong articles, or passive voice. Apart from that, Grammarly cannot really detect major grammar issues.
#7 – Hemingway Editor
For new writers, Hemingway Editor is a great tool to improve their writing skills. The app can highlight all the hard to read and complex sentences and it can also offer suggestions to replace difficult or confusing phrases with simpler ones.
I have a love-hate relationship with this app. I love it because the app always ends up curing my writer’s block. But I hate it because it’s just so damn rude to me.
So, here is what the app does — You can set a words or time goal and start writing. It’s the most dangerous content writing tool because if you stop typing for more than five seconds, you end up losing everything you wrote. Literally, everything! There is no mercy.
Though, if you end up reaching your goal, you can save all the work.
#9 – Dropbox Paper
Dropbox Paper offers a very minimalistic interface for you to write. It doesn’t have too many editing options, but there is something about a plain white screen with a crisp fonts that just makes you want to write more.
#10 – Zoho Writer
To me, Zoho Writer seems like a more visually appealing form of Google Docs. It has all the editing and forming features you might need, and it syncs content just the same way as Google Docs does. It also allows collaboration and third party integration.
I would suggest this to freelance writers who are looking for a reliable cloud app for writing, but are bored of Google Docs and it’s grey interface.
